11th February, 2010: Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Church Lane
Steve Wallis, Senior Archaeologist (Advice and Management) at Dorset County Council, has advised that AC Archaeology, an independent archaeology consultancy, are employed by the landowner/developer of the land at Church Lane to carry out an Archaeological Evaluation of the site. Having previously dug some trial holes, and carried out a geophysical survey, which indicated the possible presence of archaeological features, they will today dig 5 or 6 trenches to further evaluate the site. If features of interest are discovered, then there may be further excavation. (Source: Margaret Butler) Update received on Monday 22nd January: Several of the features identified during the geophysical survey were confirmed as being archaeological. AC Archaeology's initial inspection of pottery finds suggested that some dated from the Bronze Age and others from the Roman period. According to standard practice, AC Archaeology will now produce a report on the work. It may be that it is submitted with a planning application for the site, but that is a matter for AC Archaeology's client to decide.
