Rise in Energy-Related Fraud Amid Changes to Gas and Electricity Prices
As the UK faces ongoing changes in energy prices and regulation, we would like to raise awareness of a concerning rise in energy-related frauds.
Key Facts:
 Between June 2023 and May 2024, Action Fraud received reports of 994 energy-related frauds, totalling an alarming £31,444,505 in losses.
 The most common type of energy fraud is Door-to-Door Sales and Bogus Tradespeople where criminals pose as legitimate energy suppliers or tradespeople to deceive people.
What’s happening with energy prices? Due to fluctuations in global energy markets, the UK energy price cap continues to be a point of focus for consumers. This ongoing uncertainty in prices has led fraudsters to target households, taking advantage of the confusion around bills and offers from energy providers.
Be Aware:
 Always verify the identity of any tradespeople or sales representatives who come to your door. Legitimate energy suppliers will not show up unannounced.
 If someone claims to be from your energy provider, contact the company using the official contact details from their website before agreeing to any offers or providing personal details.
 Be cautious of unsolicited emails, phone calls, or door-to-door visits offering “discounts” or “savings” on energy bills. Scammers often use these tactics to gain personal information or payments.
How to protect yourself:
 Contact Action Fraud if you suspect you’ve been targeted by an energy-related scam: Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.
 Check the status of your energy bills or suppliers directly through Ofgem’s website or your energy provider’s customer service.
Stay vigilant and informed and help spread the word to protect our community from these scams.
